Founded in 2001, Project Bokonon is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established by a group of Wake Forest University students in Winston-Salem, NC.

Since its inception, Project Bokonon has undertaken a variety of health and education project internationally.  Project Bokonon's activities in Benin, West Africa are diverse, including supplying hospitals with essential medical tools and infrastructural additions, sending U.S. medical students to volunteer in clinics, and conducting health education and awareness campaigns in rural villages.

Through the coordination of an array of programs and cultural activities, Project Bokonon continues to fulfill its commitment to promote an awareness of international health issues, while also sharing Beninese culture with American communities.  Past activities have included sponsoring African drum and dance performances, making presentations and various schools and universities, and hosting African cultural-awareness events in communities throughout the U.S.

Derived from the local Fon language's word for "medicine man," the Project Bokonon name symbolizes the organization's focus on improving health care in Benin by empowering local communities.

Similarly, the Project Bokonon logo, with its crossed Bandaids bearing American and Beninese flags and a global map highlighting America and Benin, symbolizes the connection between the two countries and the ability of American citizens to improve the medical conditions in Benin.
