Project Bokonon is committed to working with the people of the Pobé Region of Benin, West Africa in order to help improve their health care. Our mission is to empower the Beninese people through improved access to better health care.

Project Bokonon's purpose is two-fold:

  1. To improve and enhance the quality of health in rural communities of Benin, West Africa by supporting village clinics, health care organizations, medical facilities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and
  2. To spread knowledge and awareness of international development and foster independence and self-reliance in the rural communities of Benin.

Since 2001, Project Bokonon has undertaken projects ranging from bringing medical supplies and antibiotics to Pobé hospital to building a new satellite clinic in the village of Issale.

Currently, Project Bokonon works to improve the quality of health within Beninese communities through efforts that promote health education and empowerment.  With the support of a Peace Corps Volunteer, who is present through a grant from Project Bokonon, we are able to impact communities at the grassroots level.

Examples of Project Bokonon-funded activities include:

  • Nutrition programs for malnourished children
  • HIV/AIDS Peer Education programs
  • Medical supply donations to local clinics

Project Bokonon has also helped with the logistics of sending volunteers from Unite for Sight, a non-profit dedicated to helping improve vision and eye care, to Pobé to provide free eye screenings and glasses to the local people.

Throughout everything, Project Bokonon continues to reevaluate its role in Pobé and to form new relationships in support of our mission of improving health care in this region of Africa.
